Many people around the world feel distressed, unable to sleep well and clueless on how they ended up there. Sometimes we are the ones harming our own well being. Here are 10 self harming habits you might be guilty of. Be ready to acknowledge them and work toward getting rid of those self harming practices.
10 ways you are harming your own well being
1. Not going out
Staying in doors all day everyday is harming your own well being. Try to go out as much as you can even if it means a 15 minutes walk around the neighborhood, just do something to push you out of the house. I know with new regulations on lockdown and quarantine this is something hard to do. Try and be active as much as you can around the house or exercise.
2. Overbooking yourself
You are a human, you can only handle a certain amount of things at the time. Learn to say no and turn down people, you can’t solve everyone’s problems and don’t carry the world on your shoulders.
3. Having a perfectionist obsession
There is nothing wrong with wanting something to be well done and give the best you can while doing it. However, looking for perfection in every single thing you do will only lead you to eternal disappointment. See related post How perfectionism is fear is high heels
4. Comparing yourself to others
Wanting what others have or seem to have, comparing yourself to people on social media, TV and magazine or even comparing yourself to your family members or friends or parents, all that are toxic and unhealthy ways of living. Don’t compare your chapter two to someone else’s chapter 23, you have your own journey to walk. The healthiest comparison is comparing yourself today with yourself yesterday, a month ago or a year ago. You are your own competition.
5. Talking negatively about yourself
In front of people mind your language, when you are alone mind your thoughts. What do you say about yourself when you are around people? Self limiting language and self pity won’t bring you anywhere. Talking negatively to and about yourself will prevent you to enjoy and appreciate the good things happening everyday in your life.
6. Unhealthy eating habits
Unhealthy food is bad for your health. The problem is not only unhealthy food but the way you eat food may also be the problem. Eating while multitasking, eating while walking, eating too quickly and eating in a bad position can lead to a variety of digestive issues. Remember, it is not only what you eat but how you eat it which may be harming your own well being.
7. Letting your ego take control of your life
Another way of harming your own well being is believing that you are superior to others and no one can tell you anything. Being too arrogant is unhealthy.
8. Resisting change
Stepping out of your comfort zone is not always a bad and negative thing to do. We are all called to grow and growth means change. Stay curious, try new things and explore. Refusing to change is like breathing under water, you can do it for a certain period of time but eventually you will have to get out of the water to survive. Embrace change, change is good for your own well being
9. Blaming others
Sometimes it is your own fault that things didn’t work out the way you wanted, stop blaming others for your own problems, lack of discipline, not having self respect and not having enough courage to stand up for yourself. It is time to take responsibility of your own actions.
10. Not taking care of yourself
Probably one of the most effective way to harm your own well being. Neglecting to take care of yourself can lead to long term complications. Prioritize taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

I’m terrible for comparing myself to others! That is definitely something that I want to work on, but I think I’m getting better over the past few years! X

Agree with list list wholeheartedly. I even took a course at Yale called The Science of Well Being and started to blog about it just recently. I think there is nothing as important as taking care of yourself before you even think of extending that help outside.
Lovely article. 👏

That’s absolutely true. Before even thinking of taking care of others, taking care of yourself should be the priority.
