For all students, graduation day is a special day everyone is looking forward to, the symbol of all your accomplishments through out the years of studies, a day where family, friends and professors come together to celebrate your big achievement. However, due to the outbreak of Covid-19, a number of institutions and colleges have called of their graduation ceremonies, my institution also had to cancel our graduation ceremony. The class of 2020 jokingly called class of Covid-19 will never forget their graduation experience.
The morning email
It was on the 8th of April 2020 when I received an email with the subject: “Important information, collect your graduation document.” When I saw that, I told myself this is it girl you have graduated. Four years of hard work, never missed a deadline, did my very best and gave my all, everyday looking forward to the day I walk that stage with my family and friends clapping for me and myself crying of joy because I made myself proud and my parents, all that was reduced to that email? I had big plans for my graduation ceremony, I planned of having a tailored suit specifically made for me, covering myself with flowers and congratulations cards from my family and friends, throwing a mini boat cruise and only eat Congolese dishes, yes I had big plans for the day I walk that stage. All that was reduced at singing in and downloading my own graduation document. To be honest I was devastated at first and didn’t want to tell anyone about the email I received.
To my parents
Although I did not have a graduation ceremony, I did it, I made it through four long years of studies, it is a big achievement and I consider myself blessed, I am forever thankful to God. I would like to thank my parents who have allowed me to study what I wanted without interfering in my choices, they have financially supported me through everything and it wasn’t an easy task and I am certain they had to make lot of sacrifices to cover my fees. I am also thankful that they have been supporting my emotionally, encouraging me when I felt like giving up and spiritually by praying for me. I am forever grateful for mum and dad. Thank You
To my best friend
I am grateful for all the discussion and proofreading work you had to do for all my essays and projects on top of your own work. For every time that you had to force my to take a break and rest because I was working non stop and those time where you force me to stay up and finish my work because I was starting to forget my priorities, for all your encouraging words, messages, phones calls, picnics and breaks in between studies, I am grateful you have been part of this long journey. Thank You
To my family and friends
I am grateful for all your understanding when I took three business days to call you back, when I did not pitch to your parties or birthdays celebrations because I had things to do. I am grateful for all your support, your prayers, the crazy stories you told me to make me laugh and everything in between. You saw me from the beginning of my journey until the end. Thank You for being in my life.
To my sisters
I know most of you were supposed to fly down to South Africa to celebrate my graduation day but circumstances had made it impossible. Thank you for organizing a zoom party for me, you made that week really special and I felt loved and more confident about my online graduation. We danced and laughed and laughed and laughed. Thank you for being such amazing sisters
Since the beginning of 2020, most of my colleges and friends have been hunting and applying for jobs. The current pandemic does not help them much, with the entire country on lock down and social distancing measures taking place in various part of the world, many companies had to lay off some of their employees and start remote working. Some companies cannot afford to take in new graduates or offer internships or training because they are still trying to deal with the current situation and guarantee that the current employees will not lose their job and if the company will survive this crisis. It is a very difficult time to enter the job market for fresh graduates, we have been thrown into the water at the most uncertain time the world has ever known, the journey ahead will not be easy. Some will be knocking on your door for a job, others will try to start their own businesses and find ways to pay their bills, some will move back in with their parents and some others are simply taking one day at the time to figure out this thing called adulthood as we were never ready or taught how to be financially independent after graduation. Some others (like me) are furthering their studies for one reason or another. Right now the class of 2020 of Covid-19 need kindness and compassion.Although it feels like the world around us has stopped, this will not last forever, we will get through this. If you have graduated during this time, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BIG ACHIEVEMENT, YOU MADE YOURSELF PROUD. If you know someone who has graduated, congratulate them and refrain from negative comments, just because it was an online graduation does not mean it wasn’t one.You believe you could do it and you did it. To the class of 2020 or covid-19 or whatever we have been labelled as, WE HAVE MADE IT AND IT IS A REASON TO CELEBRATE. CONGRATULATIONS
What would you like to tell the class of 2020 graduates?
Till next Sunday
